Vanderbilt study challenges childhood norms, suggests ways to improve health and well-being policymaking

Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the “Rethinking Childhoods” study by the Vanderbilt Cultural Contexts of Health and Wellbeing Initiative proposes a more inclusive approach to health policy, incorporating global perspectives to redefine childhood beyond Western norms. What started out as a service project for the Association of Vanderbilt Black Faculty and Staff affinity group and Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center quickly turned into a strong community partnership between members of the Vanderbilt community and Ida B. Wells Elementary School in East Nashville. During the 2022–23 academic year, the team coordinated more than 400 hours of volunteer service for the school. Efforts included a uniform drive, greeters to welcome students on their first day, a chemistry magic show and a new reading initiative. Learn more about the Ida B. Wells partnership >>>
